In May 2010 my students and I had the good fortune to spend four wonderful weeks in beautiful Guanajuato, studying Spanish language and Mexican culture at Escuela Mexicana. The teachers are well-prepared, enthusiastic, friendly and extremely dedicated to their students. The staff at the school is very professional and handled all our requests (including several last-minute changes) quickly and with a smile. The location is perfect--just a few minutes’ walk from the Jardín de la Unión and the other major sights of Guanajuato. My students loved their homestays, as well. They felt completely welcome and safe and were very sad to leave at the end of the program! We all left with new friends and many wonderful memories of our time in Guanajuato. In the course of five study-abroad programs that I have directed, I have worked with several Spanish language schools--Escuela Mexicana stands out in every way. I can recommend it without hesitation, and look forward to returning!

As Poudre School District's coordinator of programs and services for English Language Learners in Fort Collins, Colorado, I believe that staff development for regular education teachers is critical if ELL students are to be successful in our schools. Therefore, I wrote the "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" program which is a summer staff development program for both teachers and paraprofessionals. This three week long program has been very successful collaborating with Escuela Mexicana, an excellent Spanish Immersion School in Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico. I bring a group of approximately 20 educators every June, and our experience with the staff at Escuela Mexicana has been extremely positive. The school's director, Torsten Rufer, is amazing at organizing the many details necessary to ensure that all of my participants have a wonderful experience in their home stay, their classes, and on the excursions. The school's owner, Hayde Lopez Rodrigrez, is a charming hostess and offers a professional yet casual environment in her school, where everyone always feels comfortable and welcome, yet challenged to work hard to improve their Spanish. Guanajuato is the perfect setting for accomplishing this staff development. Teachers are comfortable, yet uncomfortable....and they return to their jobs with entirely new eyes and hearts in terms of the efforts they make to help their ELL students in their classes. I highly recommend Escuela Mexicana to school districts who realize the need to equip teachers with more skills and a heart to relate to diverse students who are not yet proficient English speakers. Escuela Mexicana will ensure that their experience in Mexico is one that will impact their classroom practice in many powerful ways.

I signed up for the Trimester program at Escuela Mexicana as soon as we moved here. Studying 3 hours daily for 3 months has allowed me to improve my Spanish greatly. At the beginning I was able to take my time reviewing grammatical concepts that needed improvement and learning practical aspects of the language that are used everyday by the local population. The teachers and directors have been extremely receptive to my needs and requests, allowing me to study at my own pace, thus becoming more confident, proficient and fluent in my Spanish. The addition of the cooking classes to my program helped me learn another aspect of the local culture, as well as the ability to practice my Spanish in a different kind of setting.

Our 9 year old daughter took two hours of private lessons daily for two months at Escuela Mexicana. We wanted to prepare her for a full language immersion when she began school here in August. Her teacher was excellent. Not only did she cover a wide variety of grammar with my daughter, her teacher was also responsive to our language objectives for our child.

Tim is a great writer and wrote a very good article about how life is in Guanajuato, please read it. You are going to have a real impression about our beautiful city (CLICK HERE TO READ IT )
My family and I spent a month in Guanajuato in the summer of 2009 and studied at Escuela Mexicana. We liked the city so much that we moved here for a year the following summer. Naturally we returned to Escuela Mexicana to become more fluent in Spanish and to prepare my daughter for attending a Spanish-only local school.
I have been very happy with the instruction and the teachers at this school and my language skills have improved dramatically. My daughter is doing well in school and is becoming more fluent every day. As a travel writer who frequently covers various countries in Latin America, I finally feel like I can communicate effectively in other Spanish-speaking countries.
We love Guanajuato for its historic architecture, colorful aesthetics, and great cultural activities. It is such a pedestrian-friendly place that we don't have a car here and seldom even need to take a taxi. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful city at 6,500 feet altitude and the classes at Escuela Mexicana are an excellent value.

We just finished spending four weeks in Guanajuato, studying at Escuela Mexicana in the mornings and exploring the city in the afternoons. I cant really express how impressed we were with the administration and teaching staff of the school. The program fit all of our needs, including an adult beginner, an adult who hadn't used Spanish in 20 years, and our four and seven year old daughters. The girls made pinatas, baskets, Mexican candy and innumerable crafts, all while learning vocabulary and grammar with the highly skilled children's specialists (Gaby, Lili, Juan Carlos...you are AMAZING). My husband and I had time with each of the teachers. They're different styles and qualifications, combined with a remarkably smooth coordination system that ensured they each built on the previous lesson of the day, kept us engaged and eager to learn all month. Most importantly, we all came away with vastly improved language skills. Guanajuato is an ideal setting - safe, fun, authentic, full of interesting places and things to do.
